A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of being invited to the launch of the Island social club’s Roti shop. As soon as I heard the word Roti I knew I had to go! Growing up in a West Indian household with a Trinidadian grandmother, Roti is something I am very familiar with especially when eating curry.
Soon as I stepped off the train I could hear all the Soca songs blazing and I instantly knew it was going to be a good night. The event was held in the open air venue of Styx Tottenham, with summer pretty much at our door (fingers crossed it stays this way) this pop-up is perfect, as you have the freedom to enjoy the sun whilst taking in the vibz with good food and drink. When I stepped in the venue it felt like a little piece of the Caribbean had landed in London.
The menu had something for everyone from, curry chicken, vegan stew and curry mutton all accompanied with fresh homemade Roti cooked right in front of you. They also gave the option of Plantain, Cassava fries, Squash fritters and even Saltfish fritters.
I decided to go for the Roti with Curry Mutton and their signature Marbot rum punch. If I do say so myself the food was really good and it reminded me of good home cooking. The Roti was soft and full of flavour, the rum punch had the perfect balance of rum and sweetness making it hard to have just one.
Everyone who was part of the event was so nice and welcoming, coming round with samples of their coconut drops. It’s a shame I couldn’t try this due to being allergic, however other people seemed to of enjoyed it.
I had such an amazing evening from the food, drinks, and the atmosphere. This is definitely the kind of place I would recommend as It’s the perfect way to bring some culture to your summer.
